I plan on racing in the spring.  Just bummed out cause I finally got to the point where I am comfortable with my lap times.  At hastings I ran 139s and mam 140s on bridgestone 002 street races.  So I would like to try a set of race tires and see if that helps me.  It just sucks cause I have yet made it to topeka but yet know the tracks up here so good.  I have my race liscense.  Just need someone to show me the way.

You have to be fast to race, so I'll stay where I'm at. They actually had to pull me off the track and put an advanced sticker on my bike or I would still be riding novice. Lap times, bike, classes ridden for local tracks would be a valueable asset to us rookies as to see where we are time/class wise, and if we should bump up. Jim I remember seeing you saying you haven't ridden hastings, but lap times for Mid America so I could compare with r6rider would start to fill in the blanks. My best lap at Hastings is 1:45 so I know I need more tracktime!

I think Jim has raced at hastings.  The  weekend I got my race liscense him and matt hall was battling it out.  They was like within a second of breaking the track record.  It was a fun one to watch.  Hastings is a tuff track on a 1000.  On mine the fastest I got down to my last track day was 142.

You have to be fast to race
um, no you don't.

All you need is a desire for competition.  That is it.  That is why there are novices, experts, and pros.. along with various bike classes so that all levels of riders can still have "fun competing" against each other.

It's the rider, not the lap time that makes a racer.

Yes riding a track day and racing are completely different.  I'll quote my friend Dave and say this.. "Racing is like shooting bullets.. track days are like throwing bullets."  It is a big difference, the difference is if you have the desire to compete and it does not matter how fast or slow you are. It's all about having fun pushing the limits of your ability.

The best way to make yourself a better, faster, and safer rider is to ride with the faster riders.

Sorry, I have never been to Hastings, must have been another rider you saw.

As for comparison, my fastest lap at MAM is a 1:31:something..(on a 2001 GSXR600) the last time I was there a couple of years ago I was doing 1:34's(on a 2007 GSXR600).  For comparison, I have thousands of laps there, and have been road racing for over 20 years.  When I was teaching the mam rider school most first day students would just break the two minute mark per lap. Average guys and gals are happy to break the 1:50 mark from what I remember there as well.

Racing is extremely fun.. and thats what it is all about to me. Having fun.

O.K. you have peaked my curiosity with your response. where can I go to look up the classes lap times? As much as I would like to try racing I would not want to embarrass myself with a very poor showing. If I could see the times I would then have something to shoot for.

There must be another milroy racing around here then.  Cause there was also one that raced at mam last year at the trophy dash.

Dont compare you track day times to race times.  When your racing you pick up the pace by fallowing and pushing your bike more.

I am the only Milroy racing I have ever known.  I last rode mam october 2007.

As for a lap time site, this is where you can find all the racing class lap times for CCS around the country:  http://www.myracingbio.com/

You'll have to muddle through that site..

And hear is the CCS site which has lots of good info for you as well:  http://www.ccsracing.us/

Awesome, thanks Jim. How do you track your laps? Over your 20 years is there a top 5 things you rely on to make you fast?

The competitive fire is there and it needs to be applied to more than just track days, interstates, backroads and walking into walmarts. The lap times are a way to gage my progress/failures.......

I have a lap timer, it shows number of laps, fastest lap, current lap, lets you know if you are on your fastest lap, has gps, tells you mph, 3 spits per lap, draws a track map on my computer for review..etc etc.. you don't need an expensive one like that though.  If you do get a lap timer, put tap over it so you are not staring at it while on the track.. just use it to review after you are done.. I've seen too many new people crash chasing a lap time.

1. Focus.. when I first started, all I did was live racing.  I didn't go to the bar, I worked at a motorcycle shop, I saved every penny I had to spend on racing, you've got to get involved and live it.

2. Memorize every part of the track.  Bumps, cracks, paint marks.. everything.  Once you do that you can use those marks or parts of the track as reference points to do the exact same thing lap after lap, use them to brake later, turn in sooner or later.. you need those reference points.

3. Ride with riders faster than you.. thats the quickest way to get faster.

4. Learn to ride or be as close to other riders as possible.. (you can't do this at track days)  you've got to get comfortable being close to other riders.. otherwise you'll never be able to pass them.

5. Learn how to adjust your suspension.. make your bike handle like crap so you know what it feels like, then get it to where you like it.. otherwise you will never know.

I don't know if those are my top fiive, but thats some good things to start with.

Great advice as always, Motomaniac; however, when you say "ride with riders faster than you" you are talking to the riders that are already proficient track riders looking to the next level and NOT the guy that has spent a couple of TDs in the novice group and wants that B sticker, right?

This goes for everyone.  Find someone a little faster than you and look for where they are pulling away from you.  Don't get me wrong though, don't just go lake breaking it everywhere trying to chase someone cause you will not learn a thing and you will end up crashing.  Use your head and look for places where they pull away from you.. then figure out why they are doing that.  Everyone can use a little get on the throttle earlier and break a little later.. look for the details too.

The problem that I've found is when you say "use your head" and that many people don't.  I will go as far as to say that we think along similar lines of the teacher-student/student-teacher mentality, but I have found A LOT of riders on the track with the "I-wanna-be-like-(fill in the MotoGP racer's name) mentality.

You will see that everywhere you go.  Those people really need to go club racing and get humbled by someone on a smaller bike than they are.  The fast track day people are usually not the fast racers.

So true.

Back on thread topic, if I had even the slightest possibility of available time and $$, I would love to race CCS this upcoming season.
